School Daze, Hair Daze: 30 Years of Progression or Regression?

Posted by Sheronda Gipson on Mar 9, 2018 6:06:29 PM

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Spike Lee’s movie, School Daze. I was in high school (I’m dating myself), when this movie came out, and I fell in love with it immediately. Not just because my homegirl, Cassie Davis, from the House of Payne and the Paynes debuted in it, but the depiction of black college life felt so natural and real to me. This movie, along with A Different World, helped me make my decision to attend, Southern University and A&M College, an HBCU.

How to Breathe Life Into Your Curls Using Curly Curl Cream

Posted by Karon Leslie on Feb 28, 2018 10:09:14 AM

So, it happened to me on a Friday night. While hanging out with a few friends in a local restaurant, I was approached by a woman who graciously informed me that my curls were “popping.”

Now for all my 3c to 4c girls, you know this was likely a pivotal moment in my life, so much so that I immediately began raving to my friends about Curly Curl Cream in all of its curl-popping splendor. Just a few months prior, I was perusing the aisles of my second home, Target, when I stumbled upon this blessing. Since then, Curly Curl Cream has been adding all kinds of bounce and bravado to my curls, and the compliments have been nonstop.

Why We Must Not Buy Into Colorism

By now, it is difficult not to have heard of Amara Le Negra, the gorgeous Afro-Latina music artist on Love & Hip Hop Miami. Besides having an epic head full of natural curls, her personality is larger than life and she has been quite vocal on the colorism she has experienced. In fact, throughout this season of Love & Hip Hop Miami, there has been an ongoing conversation about colorism from both ends of the spectrum from Amara Le Negra and Veronica Vega (another Love & Hip Hop Miami cast member). While Amara has questioned why the Latin image always is a singular depiction of fair skin and straight hair, Veronica recently asked the question of how black someone has to be to be considered black, and—citing the lack of aid in Puerto Rico as an example—notes that anyone who is not white understands inequality all too well.

The Past and Present of Addressing Itchy Scalp

When I take a minute to look at the proliferation of the natural hair movement and the rise of the availability in products specifically suited to care for and manage naturally curly, coily, kinky and wavy hair, I am amazed. Historically, African-American hair care has come a long way and I am proud to have played a role in spearheading the efforts to respond to our beauty and care management needs. It’s also great to know that we are no longer separated from the knowledge or tools we need to care for our hair. Just thinking back to what the options for our hair care used to be always makes me appreciate where we are today.

How to Eat Better for Optimal Hair Health

Posted by NI4TW on Dec 21, 2017 8:01:22 PM

With the holiday season in full swing, comfort food-eating is in full effect too. Workday potlucks. Company Christmas parties. Family dinners. Weekend holiday gatherings. Everywhere you turn there is pasta, cakes, pies, cookies, soda, wine, cocktails and lots of other “goodies.” And let’s not forget the fast food you might grab while holiday shopping. All of these foods are delicious and are a big part of celebrating the season—so I understand how difficult it can be to completely avoid them. While moderate and smaller helpings here and there are perfectly fine, there are many reasons your hair would appreciate collard greens, greens beans, salads, fruit platters and green tea instead.
