Afros in Bloom: How to Rock Hair Flowers This Spring

Posted by Tonesa Jones on Apr 6, 2018 11:38:56 AM

For me, spring is wash-and-go season. After a long winter of doing a bunch of protective styles to hide my ends from low temperatures, I’m leaving braids and twists alone for a minute. I just want a fat afro to complement the closet full of sundresses I’ll keep on rotation until it dips below 60 again. Low manipulation doesn’t have to be boring or routine though. Flowers have always been my go-to for adding some glow to my hair. A bright pop of color always looks super cute with fresh curls or a picked-out afro. (Thank you, Sammy at FlowerBattBlog for this awesome image of how to do it right!)

Protective Stylistas Love the Protective Styles Collection…Have You Tried It Yet?

Posted by NI4TW on Mar 23, 2018 4:14:40 PM

Because I always design my products with the needs and desires of you in mind, I always love hearing how satisfied you are with them. Just recently I heard the following good news from @destinedforgreatness_26 on Instagram:

I used the Bamboo & Coconut Milk Growth Oil before getting my braids, and I must say it made my hair feel moisturized and left it smelling good…Love this product line…

We are also feeling the love on Facebook where Sheree Willis wrote:

"Her products are by far the best. Every time I use another product, I am greatly disappointed and run back to Taliah Waajid. ALL of her products work fabulous in my hair. I'm never disappointed. I love the way my hair feels and the scent is perfect. Never heavy nor weighted down. My curls are perfect. My twists outs are perfect. Love! Love! Love!"

Falling in Love With Your Natural Hair: How to Embrace Your Curly Chaos While Transitioning

Posted by Tonesa Jones on Mar 9, 2018 7:29:43 PM

There was a time when I couldn’t imagine myself without straight hair. Sunday afternoons were devoted to my flatiron, oil sheen, and the sizzle of my hair frying between two metal plates. I loved the movement of my straight hair, the deep dark shine of my strands, even with the inevitable heat damage I was causing. I could not see my natural texture the same way. It was stubbornly immobile and did not reflect light the same way my pressed hair did. A year after giving up my relaxer, I still could not accept my natural hair.

Don’t Throw That Wig: How to Protect Your Wakandan Crown Under Your Wig Cap

Black Panther introduced many never-before-seen black moments to the big screen, but no moment achieved peak blackness than Okoye (played by the fabulous Danai Gurira) using a lace front as a weapon, a skill that should be added to the venerable list of black hair versatility.

Whether used as a quick style change to protect your tresses or an impromptu defensive weapon, wigs can be a healthy part of your hair regimen, but just like any protective style, maintaining your real hair under your wigs is important.

The Past and Present of Addressing Itchy Scalp

When I take a minute to look at the proliferation of the natural hair movement and the rise of the availability in products specifically suited to care for and manage naturally curly, coily, kinky and wavy hair, I am amazed. Historically, African-American hair care has come a long way and I am proud to have played a role in spearheading the efforts to respond to our beauty and care management needs. It’s also great to know that we are no longer separated from the knowledge or tools we need to care for our hair. Just thinking back to what the options for our hair care used to be always makes me appreciate where we are today.

5 Interesting Historical Facts About Braiding

Posted by NI4TW on Feb 1, 2018 1:23:31 PM

My journey and career as a licensed Master Cosmetologist and Natural Hair Care Specialist began with hair braiding—which is perhaps one of the oldest and longest enduring ways to protectively style naturally curly, kinky and coily hair. In honor of Black History Month, I’d like to share with you a few fascinating facts about the history of braiding.

3 Key Ways to Protect Your Hairline When Wearing a Protective Style

Image provided courtesy of @IAMCONNORRMRecently, I posted a video to Instagram sharing a few quick tips on how to take care of your hairline, or edges, while wearing protective styles. I shared three main ideas there on how to keep the finest and most fragile hair on your head healthy and growing—

1. Give direction on how you want your protective style installed.

2. Give your hair proper protection as well as a chance to rest.

3. Use products that will promote healthy hair growth.

Let’s delve a little more into these three points.

Protective Styling Tools to Gift to Your Favorite Protective Stylista

Posted by NI4TW on Dec 1, 2017 2:20:34 PM

If you're wondering what holiday gifts to grab for a certain style-conscious, hair care-obsessed someone in your life, you can't go wrong with tools that will help her protectively style her lovely mane all year long.

One of the most integral tools in your protective styling arsenal is the comb—and not just one comb but many. Rattail for parting, wide tooth for detangling, afro for picking---they’re all necessary. While plastic and metal combs can cause static in the hair and damage to the scalp, wooden combs are much kinder and gentler on both. Wooden combs like those offered by Breezelike help to evenly distribute your hair’s natural oils throughout your hair and don’t scratch or tear your scalp. Wooden combs are also durable and sturdy enough to last a lifetime.

Style Showcase: Head Wraps and Goddess Braids to Protect Hair Strength and Length in Winter

Posted by NI4TW on Nov 16, 2017 5:21:05 PM

It’s that time of year again when the temperatures start to dip and the air becomes dry. None of that is very good for rocking twist out or blow out styles. Cold, dry weather damages hair cuticles and leaves the hair shaft unable to retain moisture. Dry brittle hair, of course, is more susceptible to tangles and breakage. Protective styling is the key to strengthening your hair cuticles and enabling your hair to withstand the cold so that you can retain your length. I've discussed it before in the blog post here but I want to continue talking specifically about protective styling practices you absolutely want to incorporate into your hair care and maintenance regimen.
