Afros in Bloom: How to Rock Hair Flowers This Spring

Sammy at flowerbatFor me, spring is wash-and-go season. After a long winter of doing a bunch of protective styles to hide my ends from low temperatures, I’m leaving braids and twists alone for a minute. I just want a fat afro to complement the closet full of sundresses I’ll keep on rotation until it dips below 60 again. Low manipulation doesn’t have to be boring or routine though. Flowers have always been my go-to for adding some glow to my hair. A bright pop of color always looks super cute with fresh curls or a picked-out afro. (Thank you, Sammy at FlowerBattBlog for this awesome image of how to do it right!)

Even when doing the least, hair care is a must. For low maintenance wash-and-go days, a good leave-in and styling product like the Intense Moisture Bamboo and Coconut Milk Strengthening Leave-in Conditioner and the Curly Curl Cream will keep your hair moisturized and frizz free. Well moisturized hair will keep single strand knots away.

Flowers hold best without bobby pins in hair that is a few days past wash day or in curls that have been separated and picked at the roots, so a wide tooth comb or afro pick and a hair oil are needed to keep your hair looking fresh.

Picking your flower of choice is the fun part. Ever since I saw Solange’s wedding afro, I have been in love with baby’s breath. It is soft and romantic and a cute look for a dinner out on a patio. A big, bright sunflower is my weekend-going-to- the-farmer’s-market look. I love looking like a walking sunbeam with bold yellows, oranges, and reds. Whenever I need to get my hair out of my face, I do a quick tuck and pin and add a white gardenia à la Billie Holiday. This classic look from Lady Day is my work day staple.

After a long winter, in dark colors and neutrals, try playing with some fun florals this spring. Keep your hair maintenance low and your flowers fresh.
